Marta Zgierska is a Polish visual artist, photographer and photobook author. She studied photography at the National Film School in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, polish philology and social communication and journalism at Maria Curie-Sk\u0142odowska University in Lublin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her artistic and theoretical practice Zgierska explores trauma, liminal experiences and the tensions they generate, often using her own body, simple objects and reduced spaces as primary material. Since surviving a serious car accident in 2013, the physically affected body has become a key tool for examining vulnerability, withdrawal and the pressure exerted by contemporary norms of femininity and \u201cproper\u201d functioning. Working in carefully staged photographic series and installations such as Post<\/em>, Afterbeauty<\/em>, Votive Figure<\/em>, Takeover<\/em> or the book Garden<\/em>, she develops a restrained visual language of suspension and silence, seeking ways to describe alternative sensibilities in an overstimulated and increasingly exhausted society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her debut series Post<\/em> won the prestigious Prix HSBC pour la Photographie in Paris (2016) and was published as a book by Actes Sud, also receiving the PDN Photo Annual photobook award. Zgierska has been nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award (2018, 2021), the DZ BANK Art Collection Fellowship (2019) and the ING Unseen Talent Award, and in 2019 was named Artist of the Year at the DongGang International Photo Festival in South Korea. Her works have been widely exhibited, including solo shows at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, the Fort Institute of Photography in Warsaw, DongGang Museum of Photography, Gowen Contemporary in Geneva and in the Project Room at Zach\u0119ta \u2013 National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
